John "The Ranger" Taliaferro was born 1656 in Essex Co, VA and died 21 June 1720 in Gloucester Co, VA.

Col. John Taliaferro was elected Essex Co, VA House of Burgesses. Occupation: Sheriff, Essex County, Virginia. Lt. of Rangers 1692; Col. Essex Militia 1696; Burgess, Essex Co. 1699; Justice Essex Co., 1699-1705.

That he was prominent in the early Colonial Wars with the Indians is shown by the record of 31 October 1692, in the Calendar of VA State papers, that "Lieut John Taliaferro gives return of his expenses in Tobacco, as Ranger with eleven men and two Indians."

 

He married Sarah Smith. She was born 1661 in Essex Co, VA and died 1720 in Essex Co, VA. She was the daughter of Lawrence Smith and Mary Hitchon.
